Playing by the Numbers

New baseball book sorts over 16,000 major league baseball players into

teams...by their birthdays

According to the Fantasy Sports Trade Association, more than 15 million

people spend about $1.5 billion annually to play fantasy sports.*

Now, fantasy baseball fans as well as hard core numbers lovers have a new

resource at hand: Diamond Dates: The Baseball Birthday Book, author Glen

Herness’s ultimate birthday book for the baseball fan.

Based on each player’s birthday, teams are sorted by each day of the year.

Players from as far back as 1876 through the 2005 season are featured in

line-ups along with career statistics, truly blending the eras of baseball.

In addition to the fascinating line-ups (who would have put Baby Doll

Jacobson and Willie “Puddin’ Head” Jones together?), Herness has compiled

team combined statistics, including:

¨ batting averages

¨ runs
¨ at bats ¨ runs batted in
  ¨ hits ¨ stolen bases
  ¨ home runs

Pitching statistics include wins, losses, earned run averages, winning percentages,

and innings pitched.

Beyond the fun of fantasy teams, readers can also:

¨ see which teams have the highest totals in each category

¨ check the leader boards to see how one month compares to another

¨ check out which teams have the most Hall of Famers
